Food water shelter incorporated (FWS) is a not-for-profit organisation: an Australian, non-denominational, non-governmental organisation that builds and manages eco-friendly children's villages with education, social and health facilities for vulnerable women and children in developing countries. Our first children's village is Kesho Leo, which is located in the village of Sinon in the Arusha region of Tanzania, East Africa.

Position title: Kesho Leo Social Welfare Manager - Volunteer Position
When: Full time Volunteer position, 12-month posting with a one-month handover included.

Position purpose

This dynamic role has two major components:
Ensuring that the emotional and social wellbeing of Kesho Leo house mamas, children and staff is supported through the provision of education, team building and social support that will be conducted by local staff, local services or skilled volunteers.

Support the Kesho Leo manager to coordinate needs for Kesho Leo staff members, ensuring volunteers are provided with the necessary resources, facilities and emotional support to have a successful and fulfilling placement.

Managing fws Kesho Leo staff members, ensuring staff are provided with training and/or learning opportunities through the provision of education, social support and supervision.

Responsibilities
To work with Tanzanian assistant manager in regulating the adherence by all Kesho Leo mamas to Kesho Leo House Mamas Agreements and mediating any arising conflict resolutions.
To work with Tanzanian social welfare to find orphans to join Kesho Leo families.
To match appropriately the new orphans to the Kesho Leo families (age is a major consideration).
To integrate new orphaned vulnerable children into Kesho Leo families.
Create life story books for orphans and children of kesho Leo house mamas.
To meet regularly with mamas to resolve any household problems, find solutions to any disharmony, encourage any necessary personal development and celebrate in any new family joys.
To meet regularly with Kesho Leo children to ensure the appropriate emotional care and well-being of children.
Conduct an initial family and child psycho-social assessment for each family. Re-visit these assessments at appropriate intervals i.e. every 3 months.
To instigate a routine of meetings or gatherings for mamas specifically as well as general staff meetings whereby open communication is encouraged and techniques for solving problems are modeled.
To develop new Kesho Leo social welfare programs through the program brief process and to deliver programs according to approved program briefs when championing specific welfare initiatives.
Work with other volunteers in maintaining and developing relationships with the Kesho Leo Community, employees and other local education communities, specifically Engosengiu primary school and Edmund Rice Secondary School.
Model best practice in self care and promote pro-active behavior in caring for the emotional well being of volunteers.
Liase with local social welfare facilities particularly the Arusha Mental health Trust at Mt Meru hospital.
To organise and coordinate community groups and education programs at Kesho Leo for the greater Sion community. This will include liaising with the SInon community and tailloring programs to community interests.
Provide a fortnightly report on social welfare activities at Kesho Leo to the fws social welfare manager.
Provide good news articles, updates to the gimme shelter Editor to use in the monthly fws newsletter and maintain/participate in the fws team blog site.
Provide appropriate updates of family achievements and cohesion four times a year to our sponsorship co-ordinator to keep our donors informed of families' progress.
Meet financial reporting requirements as directed, but specifically from the fws Funding Manger, the fws Program Manager and the fws Treasurer, working with the fws Bursar locally.
Be conscious of security requirements in a developing environment.
To work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide support where required to the social enterprise initiatives of mamas. For example, supporting the mama's in their sewing program.

Key performance indicators
Success in finding orphans to move into Kesho Leo.
Successful integration of orphans into Kesho Leo families.
Delivery of case management support to Kesho Leo families, including success in assessing and developing appropriate responses to individual family needs.
Positive engagement in classes held for Kesho Leo children and House Mamas.
Successful development and maintenance of relationships in the Arusha Community.
Establishment of appropriate community groups and education.
Successful promotion within the Kesho Leo community of supporting one another and the value of emotional well being within the home.
Regular planned updates to management regarding the social welfare programs running at Kesho Leo.
Positive feedback from the Kesho Leo residents regarding harmony in the home and the positive systems in place to allow for open communication.

Skills & requirements
· Qualification in psychology or social welfare.
· Experience working with disadvantaged women and children.
· Experience in team building.
· Experience working in a developing country an advantage.
· Innovation and an ability to train the trainer.
· International Drivers License and willingness to drive a 4WD vehicle in emergency situations.
· Current First Aid Certificate.
· Computer efficiency in the Internet, Microsoft Word.
· A willingness to seek fluency in Swahili.
